A Wilderness Like No Other

Set along the banks of the mighty Tugela River in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom, Zingela Safaris is where untamed wilderness meets understated luxury. Perfectly positioned between Durban and Johannesburg, it is a destination designed for those seeking both adventure and refined tranquillity.

AN UNTAMED ESCAPE

Zingela forms part of a 6,000-hectare private and community conservation area and is home to the largest, and possibly last, free-ranging population of giraffe in South Africa. The rugged, remote terrain allows the reserve to remain unfenced, creating an immersive safari experience where wildlife moves freely across dramatic landscapes of river valleys, cliffs and open bushveld.

With over 100 kilometres of hiking, running and paddling trails woven through the reserve, guests enjoy rare access to untouched wilderness. Each path leads to breathtaking vistas, quiet riverbanks and moments of stillness that feel worlds away from everyday life.

Our bush camps and lodges have been thoughtfully hand-crafted from natural materials, blending seamlessly into the landscape while offering comfort, privacy and charm. Guests may choose from fully catered romantic en-suite chalets, self-catered chalets and safari tents, as well as secluded campsites and wild camping experiences.

As a family-owned and managed retreat, we pride ourselves on personalised hospitality, exceptional service and memorable experiences. From private river adventures and fly fishing excursions to guided abseils down canyon cliffs, each stay is tailored to create meaningful moments in nature.

Accommodation rates are per person sharing per unit, with a 50% discount for children aged 3–12 years and no charge for infants under 3. A once-off Community Conservation Fee (R90 per adult, R45 per child) directly supports river conservation, trail maintenance and local employment initiatives within the Tugela Valley, ensuring your stay contributes to the preservation of this extraordinary ecosystem.

CATERED HOSPITALITY

Zingela is renowned for its refined rustic bush cuisine, generous, flavourful and thoughtfully prepared. Meals are served at the main camp, where guests gather to enjoy warm hospitality and beautifully presented dishes inspired by the African landscape.

With the exception of the “Larney Lane” rooms, accommodation rates exclude meals, allowing guests the flexibility to tailor their stay. We kindly request that meals be pre-booked to allow our kitchen to prepare with care, as we are delightfully removed from the rush of town life. Special dietary requirements are gladly accommodated, and early dinners can be arranged for younger guests after a day of adventure.

Meal Times & Rates:
Breakfast – R145 per person (8am)
Lunch – R135 per person (1pm)
Dinner & Dessert – R200 per person (7pm)
Fully Catered – R480 per person

RESEARCH

Beyond its beauty, Zingela holds a distinguished reputation as a research and conservation destination. The reserve offers a rare environment that is wild yet safe, remote yet accessible, ideal for immersive, hands-on conservation fieldwork.

Research initiatives are led by on-site owner and manager Dr. Peter Calverley, who holds a PhD in Conservation Ecology and serves as an Honorary Researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In collaboration with leading scientists, Zingela contributes meaningful data to conservation management while fostering environmental awareness within surrounding Zulu communities. Each research visit strengthens the ecological integrity of this protected landscape.

MORE
THAN A DESTINATION

Zingela is more than a destination, it is an experience of space, silence and significance. Whether you arrive for adventure, relaxation or research, you leave with something deeper: a connection to the land, to nature, and to a way of life where time slows and wilderness takes centre stage.
