Adventure Awaits at Zingela

Set in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom, Zingela enjoys over 320 days of sunshine a year and spectacular sub-tropical weather. With summer rains bringing the Tugela River to life, and rugged terrain stretching in every direction, nature has created the ultimate outdoor playground. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline on the river, exploring trails on foot or bike, casting a line into quiet waters, or simply relaxing beneath a thorn tree with a good book, African time rules here.

SEASONAL ADVENTURES

Adventure activities are influenced by the seasons. River activities depend on rainfall, and summer brings the most exhilarating white-water conditions. Nature always has the final say.

Qualified guides are required for rafting and abseiling

Activities are weather and river dependent

Children’s rates apply to ages 3–12

Please notify us in advance if bringing motorised bikes

White Water Rafting
& Kayaking

Must be booked and paid for prior to arrival to ensure qualified guides are available.

From mild (Grade 1) to wild (Grade 5), our 20km stretch of the Tugela River offers rapids for all ages and experience levels. Journey through the dramatic Tugela Canyon on an unforgettable half-day or full-day adventure. Big water rafting typically runs from November to April, depending on rainfall and river levels.

• R350 per person – Half Day
• R700 per person – Full Day

Mountain Biking
& Adventure Bikes

We’ll gladly provide route guidance to explore the surrounding wilderness.

Explore scenic single tracks and rugged 4x4 jeep tracks surrounded by wildlife. Giraffe, kudu and impala are often spotted along the way. Guests may bring their own mountain bikes and ride freely within designated areas.

Important Guidelines:
• No high-speed riding
• Keep noise levels to a minimum
• No bikes past the rock wall at main camp
• Please inform us if bringing quad or motorbikes

Abseiling

Must be booked and paid prior to arrival.

Face your fear on the cliffs overlooking the Tugela Canyon. Registered and experienced guides ensure safety while you step over the edge into an unforgettable descent.

• R320 per adult
• Half price for children (3–12 years)

Rock Climbing

We've got the gear ready for you!

Our rock-climbing wall just upriver from main camp is perfect for beginners and children wanting to try climbing and a small abseil in a safe environment.

• R200 per person
• Half price for children (3–12 years)

Fly Fishing

Fishing policy available on request.

Fly fishing for Yellowfish in the Tugela River is more than a sport. It’s a passion. With over 20km of river to explore, anglers are spoilt for choice.

​

Permit Fee:
• R150 per person (once-off)
• Half price for minors (3–12 years)

​

All funds support the Tugela River Conservation Initiative, contributing to research, river cleanups and community upliftment.

Guided Game/Giraffe Walk

Experience the bush on foot with a guided walk through Zingela’s unfenced reserve, where wildlife roams freely across the rugged Tugela landscape. This immersive experience offers the rare opportunity to observe giraffe and other plains game up close, while learning about the flora, fauna and delicate ecosystems that make this conservation area so unique.

Slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with the rhythm of the wild as your knowledgeable guide shares insights into tracking, animal behaviour and the natural history of the valley.

Night Time Scorpion Hunt

As darkness falls, the bush reveals a different kind of magic. Armed with UV lights, guests venture out on a short guided walk to discover one of nature’s most fascinating surprises, scorpions that glow under ultraviolet light.

This activity is especially popular with children, who are amazed to see these tiny nocturnal creatures illuminate in the night. Safe, educational and wonderfully exciting, the scorpion hunt is a memorable family adventure that adds a touch of wonder to any stay at Zingela.

Not every adventure needs adrenaline. Enjoy guided game walks, birding, trail running, paddling, or simply relax under the shade of a thorn tree with a good book. The Tree of Idleness welcomes all.
